The Micro Four Thirds System Camera

Olympus and Panasonic announced the new, mirror less format / lens mount based on (and compatible with) Four Thirds in August of last year. The Micro Four Thirds system uses the same sensor size (18 x 13.5 mm) but allows slimmer cameras by removing the mirror box and optical viewfinder. The new format has three key technical differences: (1) roughly half the flanges back distance (distance from mount to the sensor), (2) a smaller diameter lens mount (6 mm smaller) and (3) two additional contact points for lens-to-body communication (now 11 points). Removing the mirror mechanism allows this shorter flange back distance, meaning lenses for the new mount can be considerably smaller than current Four Thirds designs. The format requires framing to be carried out using Live View on either the LCD monitor or an EVF. Existing Four Thirds lenses can be used on Micro Four Thirds cameras using an adapter.

Olympus already launches the Micro Four Thirds system: The Pen E-P1 commemorates the 50th anniversary of Olympus's Pen series of half-frame 35mm cameras. These small, modestly-priced amateur/travel/family cameras, manufactured from 1959 to 1966, were quite popular in the period just before the single-lens reflex camera design consumed the market. Oly reportedly sold over 17 million PENs so I would imagine that they're hoping for similar success with the digital version.

Not quite a dSLR but almost. Very flexible and light weight while producing photos nearly as good as a 'better' dSLR (Canon 40D) and as good as Canon T1i. Wonderful for travel. Lack of viewfinder may be a problem for some but that can be readily solved by using Hoodman Hoodloupe which fits over the 3" LCD and has glass viewfinder lens with adjustable dioptre. No problem now with LCD washout or viewing difficulty and quick to the eye. Great for fine focus in manual mode. A winning combo. You can compare this great camera with Canon G11 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1K-K.

CANON PowerShot G11:

Canon has announced a handful of compact cameras including models aimed squarely at keen photographers. The premium quality Canon lens delivers picture-perfect performance, offering a 5x wide angle (28mm) zoom with optical Image Stabilizer (IS). This allows handheld shots to be taken at much slower shutter speeds (4-stops) than conventional non-IS models - allowing perfect shooting in darker conditions or at a lower ISO. Greatly reducing blur caused by camera shake, photographers can shoot at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without the need for a tripod.
